A Sanctioned Change February 17, 2010

Most Muslims make the claim that the Qur’an is perfect and remains free from changes, contradictions, and is the same word for word since the life of Muhammad. However, the Qur’an itself disagrees with this to a degree:

Surah Al Baqarah Chapter 2:106

“None of Our revelations Do we aboragate Or cause to be forgotten, But We substitute Something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah hath power over all things?” (Yusuf Ali “The Holy Qur’an Abdullah” 2009)

This verse seems to make something clear when assuming Islamic theology; the Qur’an during the time of Muhammad was fluid and subject to change.

There are no two verses in the Qur’an which contradict each other. I challenge the so called “professional students” who posted this article to point out a single contradiction in the Qur’an rather than just making bold statements.

The argument put forward is so poor and the authors fail to realise that the verse they quoted from the holy Qur’an provides the answer. Allah says in the holy Qur’an 2:106 that He does NOT abrogate His revelations but He comes up (subtitutes) with a better more charitable one or the like of it.

2:106 of the Qur’an ends by stating: “Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?” meaning that mankind should know that Allah has supremacy/authority over all things. If Allah wants to substitute a verse/revelation with a better/similar one then by all means He can, because He has the power/authority to do so. Who are we to question Allah’s authority? But when Allah substitutes a verse/revelation with a better/similar one, He reveals in such a way that no two verses of the Qur’an would ever contradict, nor any verse of the Qur’an to be forgotten by a revelation of another.

Abrogation in the sense that Allah substitutes a verse/revelation with a better/similar one, then yes. But this in no way means the Qur’an is corrupted or at odds. If Allah wants to substitute a verse/revelation with a better/similar one then by all means He can, because He has the power/authority to do so. Who are we to question Allah’s authority?

How do you define the term “contradiction”?

Do these quoted verses represent a contradiction and if so why?

“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground…” – Luke 24:1-3

“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, ‘Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?’ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.” Mark 16:1-5

Why are you side tracking? Where does the Bible fit in to this debate? The argument is about abrogation in the Qur’an. I asked you to point out a single contradiction in the Qur’an so why are you showing me you’re Bible. Bringing the Bible into this argument will only lengthen the debate for no reason. The topic is ‘Abrogation in the Qur’an’ not ‘Abrogation in the Bible’. First you need to answer my challenge: point out a single contradiction in the Qur’an.

We’re trying to first understand how you would define the word “contradiction,” just as we asked above. Definitions are key when trying to understand someones position.

You are the one who is saying the Qur’an has contradictions, not me. So it is up to you to show me the contradiction you believe to be in the Qur’an.

Contradictions in scripture: verses that have aspects that are illogical or inconsistent with each other.

So a contradiction is something that is inconsistent or illogical. Would you say these two verses from the Bible are contradictions or not? This merely allows us to see how you apply this definition, not debate these two Scripture pieces.
